A panorama of monsoon skies over the deserts of New Mexico.

Into the Great Wide Open

Desert of Central New Mexico

New Mexico is the fifth largest state in the nation (by size), yet ranks 37th in population. As a result there are seemingly endless miles of open space with little except some cacti, scrub grass, and coyotes. This panorama gives a sense of the vastness of the country, with miles of open land uninterrupted until Mount Taylor, the large volcano on the horizon. For much of the year the foreground would be brown and gold, but this is the monsoon season. The grass is green, flowers blossom, and intense storms abound.
