Sandia Solstice

Timing is everything, as the saying goes. After being shrouded in a heavy blanket of clouds for most of the day the Sandias cleared late one winter day just in time for the setting sun to illuminate the mountain. Bright mountain faces and a tuft of cotton cloud contrasted with the deep shadows of the valleys, revealing a magical depth to a mountain that often appears relatively unidimensional in the harsh summer sun. The golden grass in the foreground contrasted with the deeper hues of the sky above. Magic.
As I captured these photos a lone coyote emerged from the arroyo in front of me and let out a few long and eerie howls. For all of its challenges the Desert Southwest has a charm that I suspect is hard to replicate.
